Xbox 360 Price Cuts ConfirmedPosted 5:32pm Wed Sep 03, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: Xbox 360, Price Cuts
Remember the rumor we reported on that said that extensive price cuts are in the works for the Xbox 360? Well, Major Nelson announced today that this is indeed the case, as the cuts will be official starting on September 5. Check out the new prices below:
  • Xbox 360 Arcade - $199
  • Xbox 360 - $299
  • Xbox 360 - Elite $399
This means that the Arcade is now cheaper than the Wii, so it will be intriguing indeed to see how much of an effect this will have on the sales figures for the coming months.

Rumor: 360 To Get Massive Price CutsPosted 5:40pm Mon Aug 04, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: Xbox 360, Microsoft, Price Cut
Been waiting for the price on the Xbox 360 to drop? Well, it's almost time to get one, as Kotaku has reported that fifty-dollar price cuts for all three SKUs (Arcade, Pro, Elite) are in the works for September. That'll bring the Arcade down to $199, the Pro down to $299, and the Elite down to $399.

This now makes the Arcade cheaper than the Wii, which will make September's NPD numbers that much more interesting when they hit in October. It's hard to say if this development can slow down the Wii juggernaut, but it could help the 360 break away from the PS3 this holiday season. It'll be fun to watch.

Wall Street Journal Confirms Xbox 360 Price DropPosted 2:15pm Fri Jul 11, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: Xbox 360, Microsoft, Price Cut
It's been rumored for a while now, but a $50 price cut for the Xbox 360's Pro SKU is indeed in the works, according to The Wall Street Journal. They report that "people familiar with the matter" have confirmed to them that the price cut is coming and may take effect as early as Sunday, July 13.

It is currently unknown whether or not the Arcade and Elite SKUs will also be receiving a price cut, but we'll let you know if those details surface. They may come as soon as Microsoft's E3 press conference, which will likely address the Pro SKU's price cut.

Insomniac Expands To East Coast With New StudioPosted 12:08pm Wed Jun 04, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: Insomniac, Ted Price

GameDaily has revealed that Insomniac Games, the developers behind the Ratchet and Clank series as well as Resistance: Fall of Man and its upcoming sequel, will be opening a new development studio in North Carolina, marking the first time they have expanded outside of their current Burbank, California location in their 14-year history. They currently plan to have it up and running by early 2009.

The studio will be built in the Raleigh-Durham area, which is known as the "Research Triangle" and is home to a wealth of game companies, including development studios owned by EA, Ubisoft, and Epic in addition to various other independent developers and publishers. Insomniac chose the area for the new studio because they found it to have a "great combination of talent, great quality of life, and great cost of living."

To head up the studio, Insomniac plans to send Chad Dezern, their art director, and Shaun McCabe, their lead gameplay programmer, to the new location as studio director and production director, respectively. The two are currently working on Resistance 2, but they will leave for North Carolina once the game is completed to hire 25-30 new developers and prepare the studio to begin work on new and existing intellectual properties.

Patapon: Just a Really Good Deal for the PSPPosted 4:04pm Mon Jan 21, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Patapon, Sony, PSP, price drop

Recently I reported an apparent price-drop for Sony's Patapon, the company's very Locoroco-esque and next promising hit for the PSP. Though the game was originally listed with an MSRP of $29.99, the game's cost remains lowered to $19.99.

Today Sony updated its popular PlayStation blog with the reason for the drop: the cost has been lowered to the Greatest Hits price point in order to attract gamers that might otherwise pass it up or lose it in the barrage of upcoming PSP titles.

Here's the official word from Jeff Reese, director software marketing.

Patapon is really different and highly creative, a new kind of PSP experience we don’t want anyone to miss. So to make it more accessible to everyone, we are happy to officially announce that we are releasing it at $19.99, lower than other new PSP games. It’s a game that shouldn’t get lost with some other big titles launching on the platform. It deserves your attention because it’s very cool.

Totally called it. You can look for the game on February 26.

New Resistance 2 Interview VideosPosted 1:09pm Thu Jan 17, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: PlayStation 3, Resistance 2, Resistance Fall of Man, video, interview, people, Insomniac Games, Ted Price, Colin Munson
Video footage of a recent interview of Ted Price and Colin Munson of Insomniac Games regarding Resistance 2 (dated for 2008), the sequel to the best (or second best, depending on your love for Call of Duty 4) shooter on the PlayStation 3, has hit the Web.

Hit the jump to view all three of them, but keep in mind that the quality level is a little low.

The game is said to feature:
  • A huge co-op component featuring eight player story-driven campaigns over PSN (two player local) alongside single-player campaigns.
  • Sixty player competitive modes with a focus on squad-versus-squad combat set in huge United States landscapes.
  • New enemies including Chameleon and Stalker with total cloaking ability
  • Multiplayer class system. Three basic templates - tank with heavy weaponry, special ops for distance (bullseye modified with zoom) and medic.
  • Online matching - standard difficulty discarded for scaled challenges for team skill.
  • Partially randomised geometry making levels different with each play through.
  • Insomniac have been listening to players complaints about the first game and are also further tapping the power of the PS3 to give more enemies onscreen and improved AI. They are also working on a solution to the long checkpoints and health system.

What's the Deal with Patapon?Posted 1:29pm Mon Jan 14, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Sony, PSP, Patapon, gamestop, price drop
Hmm. You look familiar.

While bouncing around on Gamestop's latest price-drop listings page today I happened to come across Sony's Patapon, a PSP game that looks very similar to the popular PSP hit, Locoroco (and that's not a coincidence).

While it's customary for price-drops to occur for really old games you should already have played and really bad games you should never touch, why is there a $10 drop for a game that isn't even out yet? Is it so horrible that they're dying to rid themselves of stock they currently don't have or are they just trying to solicit pre-orders? Or maybe it's merely a really nice deal?

I am become confused...

PlayStation 2 Price Cut in 2008, Save 30 BucksPosted 12:20pm Fri Nov 02, 2007 by Shiva Stella Tags: PlayStation 2, Sony, price cut
MCV has revealed that the slimmer, sexier PlayStation 2 currently selling for an easy $129 will receive a new $30 price cut in 2008, lowering the cost to $99.

The model is also being adjusted to contain a built-in power supply. The news follows the unit's 7th Anniversary and Sony's confirmation that it has sold more than 120 million PS2s world-wide since launch.
