Altair + you = happy

If you've been carefully observing Ubisoft's development and release details for its very hotly anticipated Assassin's Creed then you'll be pleased to know that today is the game's official ship date; copies of the title for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 should be available at local retailers by tonight or tomorrow morning (you might even be able to get it earlier depending on your mad shopping skills and/or annoying persistence/begging).

Here's a score roundup that I'll update tomorrow with the title's "official release" statement. The average for the Xbox 360version is currently at 84, followed by an 84 for the PlayStation 3counterpart. At least the scores are in the same range.

  • 100 - GamePro: "It's hard to put the sheer size and brilliance of Assassin's Creed into words."
  • 100 - GamesRadar: "With its riveting story, beautiful visuals and surprisingly lifelike world, Assassin's Creed is an incredibly deep, enjoyablegame..."
  • 96 - XboxAddict: "A masterpiece; a true gem."
  • 95 - Game Informer: "It's a game people will still be talking about five years from now."
  • 91 - GameTrailers (video review here)
  • 90 - GameSpot (video review here)
  • 87 - Computer and Videogames
  • 79 - TeamXbox
  • 77 - IGN
  • 75 - Worthplaying
  • 70 - Eurogamer
  • 70- 1UP: "It attempts a lot of ambitious things and it almost succeeds at every one."
  • 67 - Planet Xbox 360: "After the first level I thought I had a winner on my hands for sure but as I played more... the game became more repetitive."

Have a link to the official site and feel free to check out our own AC coverage (at the right do a tag search) which will soon include our review. Click the jump to view the official launch trailer.

Looks like 1Up took a page from Gamespot's book on how to review Ratchet and Clank and decided that being the odd man out at 7.x get's you lots of page hits.

Noticed that too. If I were metacritic I wouldn't even list the people out of range. There's a definite distinction between a 90+ and a 70+ game. Unless all the A-list people are on drugs.

That would disclude my 2-star Beautiful Katamari review as nearly everybody else gave the game a 70-90% score.

GameTab doesn't count "outlier" scores toward its average, so scores too far from the mean aren't counted (though they're still listed).

Usually, though, when I'm reading reviews for a game I'll start with the lowest-scoring ones. It takes more guts to give Mega Hype Game a 7 when everybody else is giving it a 10, though you have to back that up.

That GameTrailers review says Ubisoft "went out on a limb" not making a big-budget game as a first person shooter.

Ubisoft rarely makes FPS gams. If anything they're better known for their third person acrobatic games than anything else.

Apparently the lesson is that all big-budget games are/should be shooters? My problem with counting extremist scores is that the majority of them are crap that cite a game as being better or worse than it really is. Either way, someone (either the outlier or the majority) is lying to you, and both are suspect.

Re:Aaron...

Agreed for the most part, when I think Ubisoft it's all PoP and Rayman, but they also have those games by that ghostwritten hackjob of a writer Tom Clancy as well as Haze and Farcry.

Re:shiva...

Yea, the review system in general is lame in my opinion. I've always dug the method that Famitsu uses with four people giving a cumulative score. It seems to give legitimate scores with more regularity. Then again, even that has aberrations like DOA4 getting near perfect.

Scores are varying quite a bit on this one.
